Venus Fly Trap

Picture
Phylum: Anthophyta
Scientific name: Dionaea muscipula
Where is it found: It is indigenous to the United States, mainly in North and South Carolina. Its reputation of being a tropical plant is entirely false; it requires a dormant winter to survive. It is found near swamps or marshes where soil has a very low amount of nitrogen.
Reproduction: During the spring, the Venus fly trap will grow flowers that when properly pollinated will develop into small, black, round seeds that take many years to develop into a mature plant.
Interesting fact: Though it is most well known for being a coniferous plant, it still relies on photosynthesis for energy. Also, scientist hypothesis that catching insects is the plants adaptation for supplementing the nutrients that nitrogen poor soil fails to give it.
