Archaebacteria
    -the only kingdom in the domain Archaea. They are also prokaryotic and unicellular.

  • More ancient than eubacteria
  • Though they are prokaryotic, archaebacteria are much more closley related to eukaryotes than eubacteria
  • Come in many different shapes and require vastly different nutrients. They get their nutrients either from producing them themselves, or obtaining them from other organisms.
  • They live in extreme environments including boiling hot springs, thermal vents on the ocean floor, and areas with no oxygen. For this reason, it is believed that archaebacteria was the first living organism on Earth.
  • Much like eubacteria, they also generally reproduce by binary fission 
  • Unlike eubacteria, archebacteria's cell walls are not made up of peptidoglycan.
  • Archaebacteria move by using a flagella, if they move at all.
  • Like eubacteria it helps in many ways, fixing nitrogen into a form plants can use, decompose organisms, and help aid digestion.
  • Occasionally archaebacteria does harm animals too, by either multiplying extremely fast or secreting toxin to harm the organism.  
  • Archaebacteria can also live in areas with extremely high salt concentrations such as the Dead Sea.
